DMORT Brings Funeral Directors to Natural Disasters

I thought this recent article (The Funeral Directors Deployed to America’s Deadliest Disasters) was such a great example of something that I never thought about but seemed so obvious when I did.

So much of the aftermath of natural disasters is focused on first responders (medical personnel, police and firefighters) and deservedly so. This focus, however, is on what comes after the immediate disaster response.

Robert Vigil, featured in the article, is one of 186 funeral directors who respond during a disaster and become part of the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT) as part of the Department of Health and Human services (HHS). DMORT helps with identifying and preparing the overwhelming number of bodies for burial.

I think this could be a fascinating story to explore. Plus, there are real people who have experiences and true stories to share so that your character can be full of heart, mind and soul. Or not, depending on the character.

Who wants to talk more about how you can use this in your current or next story?
