As if a missing person case isn’t already attention grabbing, add in the complication of a remote location fill of nooks and crannies of rugged terrain and search and rescue crews have their work cup out for them. This recent article (Tech Makes It Easier to Search Wilderness for Missing People) explains some of the technology available that professionals and ordinary people can use to conduct effective and comprehensive searches of rugged terrain.
One of the things that I liked about the article is that is talked about how when Amanda Eller went missing a remote Hawaiian forest, one of her friends, Yesenia D’Alessandro downloaded a GPS tracking app on her phone and started searching. D’Alessandro wasn’t the only one. A group of Eller’s friends tracked where they had painstakenly searched for her. Search and rescue crews were able to gather all the data of the ground that Eller’s friends had covered and created a digital map so that the crew knew where to focus their efforts next.
These kinds of GPS tracking apps can be used in stories like:
Finding a missing child
Or
Following a cheating spouse
Or
Looking for a hiding spot for your your stolen treasure or illegally-gained money
Or
Searching for criminals in hiding
Or
Trying to find a teen who has run away
Or
Looking for a good location to hid from an abusive spouse or parent.
Or
What about the search and rescue team member who really needs to have a success after a string of failures?
Who wants to talk more about how you can use this idea in your current or next story?
